K + H met us on a very warm summer afternoon at the Crocker Art Museum in Downtown Sacramento. They were a bit nervous at first, but by the time we left, they were holding hands, laughing at nothing in particular, completely unaware of the camera. We didn’t plan for it to also be the same weekend as Sacramento Pride, but we love it when life brings you those special coincidences.

Our approach to posing is a little different from how most documentary photographers normally do it. We don’t stick only to rigid, uncomfortable poses. We call them posed photos that feel candid. We’re creating the conditions for real moments. A hand on a jaw, a laugh caught mid-sentence, the way you both feel completely silly being cuddly in front of a camera. Then we document the moments as they happen.

Why the Crocker Art Museum Works So Well for Engagement Photos

The Crocker is the oldest public art museum in the western United States, and its history shows up in the best possible ways. Couples planning engagement sessions in Downtown Sacramento love it for a few reasons:

  • Layered textures in one location. Between the historic Victorian-era building, the stunning paintings, and the modern all white exterior, you get three completely different visual moods without ever leaving the block.
  • Soft, directional light. The high walls around the Friedman Court and the museum’s directional lighting give us that warm, film-like light we build our whole style around, even on a hot Sacramento afternoon.
  • A backdrop with meaning. Art museums have always been spaces for people to see themselves reflected back, which makes the Crocker a quietly powerful setting for a queer couple’s engagement story. Not to mention the stories of California’s history told through the paintings.
  • Central, easy access. Located at 216 O Street in downtown Sacramento, it’s walkable from the Capitol Mall and the Riverfront Promenade, with light rail stops close by if you want to skip parking altogether.

What to Expect From Your Session

We build every engagement session the same way we’d build a wedding day: loosely scripted, but led by what actually happens between you two. Expect some walking between galleries and the courtyard, a mix of directed prompts and quiet in-between moments. Most bookings with the Crocker are only 1 hour long, so if you’re looking to add an outfit change we’d plan for one outfit inside the museum and one outfit outside. Most sessions run 60 to 120 minutes, which is enough time to move through a few different backdrops without ever feeling rushed or performative.

Booking Note for the Crocker Art Museum

Because the Crocker is an active museum, professional and staged photography, including engagement sessions, has to be booked through the museum’s Private Events Department in advance rather than just showing up and surprising them. Requests are typically accepted at least two weeks ahead, though booking 30 days out is recommended since dates fill quickly.

Is the Crocker Art Museum LGBTQ+ friendly for engagement photos? Yes. The Crocker is a public museum open to all couples, and as photographers, LGBTQ+ representation isn’t an add-on for us, it’s central to who we are as a business.

Can you take engagement photos at the Crocker Art Museum without a permit? Professional, staged sessions like engagement shoots require advance booking through the museum’s Private Events Department. You can reach out to the museum through their website.

How much does an engagement session cost with Adrienne & Dani Photography? Our Heirloom Collection wedding package includes a local engagement session. Engagement sessions can also be added individually to custom wedding photography collections, starting at $650 for a local session or $800 for an adventure session outside of Sacramento.

What should we wear for an art museum engagement session? Solid colors and soft textures photograph beautifully against the Crocker’s architecture. We’re happy to send a full styling guide once your session is booked.

How far in advance should we book our Crocker Art Museum engagement session? We recommend booking at least 30 days ahead to lock in both your photography date and the museum’s private shoot approval.

Sacramento Wedding Photographers

We’re Adrienne & Dani, two people who genuinely believe that great wedding photography should feel like something you inherited, not something you ordered. We’ve spent 16+ years reading the room and making photographs that feel less like documentation and more like something you’d find tucked in a drawer at your grandmother’s house. If that sounds like exactly what you’ve been looking for, we’d love to hear from you. And if you’re just here for the good vibes, come find us on Instagram.
